About me

The Tarot; its hidden meanings, imagery and story.

I completed my BA in Fine Art and Art History in 2008. I am now pursing my MA in Fine Art. Continuing from my photographs in my third year exhibition I am now taking the subject a step further and creating a motion film whilst at the same time creating still images taken from the film. I am using the local landscape as a backdrop for my film in the same way as my previous work. I am keen to use photographic images of my local area as a backdrop for my work as I believe the undeveloped agricultural, pastoral and bleak mountainous landscapes offer a setting conducive to contemplation and the sense of solitude that is inherent in the quest or “The Great Work” revealed through the Tarot Major Arcana.

Through producing my work I hope to gain a better understanding of my subject and formulate a vehicle that will encourage the passing of information and a discussion of the subject matter. At the same time I aim to dispel certain misunderstandings surrounding my chosen subject whilst also encouraging the exploration of its Mystery.

The Tarot depicts the story of the Hero’s quest and his overcoming of challenges and obstacles. For my current work I have introduced a new element, the Qabalah Tree of Life. The Tree of Life at its most basic level is a form of theosophy and cosmogony. Between the highest realm, which corresponds to the most ineffable Deity and the lowest realm, which corresponds to the physical world or manifest universe, are eight other gradations. These gradations represent planes of consciousness, the gradual evolution of The Prime Mover towards manifestation through ever more dense levels of vibration and whatever else can be imagined to connect to the One source of all the physical world of everyday consciousness. Each station of the Tree has different correspondences, imagery and symbolism. Most importantly, each station of the Tree and the paths in between/ linking them are represented by a Tarot card(s). The Tarot story then becomes an individual’s odyssey and varies depending on the path taken up and down the tree.

To the extent that this is an inner journey through the levels of consciousness I plan to take the observer through an individual quest drawing on the subjective manifestations of the correspondences and symbolisms attributable to the particular paths and sephiroth traversed. The Heroin and I will attempt to explore and convey them in a consistent unfolding of events and encounters analogous to the great odysseys of world mythology.

I am always interested in discussing my chosen subject with others. If you would like to contact me please do so.
